Fed up with the heat, Christmas shopping, crowds, traffic, parties and
planning for the holiday? Welcome to the silly season.

Usually I'm feeling frantic in the lead-up to Christmas but this year I'm
slowly winding down with my family in Queensland's garden city of
Toowoomba.

Having time to sit back, reflect and observe the world rushing by I often
wonder what it's all about.

Many Australians have never been wealthier yet are working longer hours
than ever to consume more of what the media tells us we need to be happy.

Meanwhile, our planet is grappling with water and energy shortages,
extreme weather, war, hunger, disease, pollution, and widening gaps
between rich and poor.

Make a difference

On top of our already stressed lives, it can all seem overwhelming but we
can each make a difference in our own small spheres of influence - just
throw a pebble in a pond and watch the ripples expand.

We all know to turn off electrical appliances at the wall, conserve water,
walk rather than drive, help others less fortunate where we can...

But to make an impact on a wider scale, I believe the Internet is our best
bet.

Hyperlinks subvert hierarchy. Power (and responsibility) has now extended
to everyone with a Net connection.

Anyone can be a publisher these days via email, blogs, web sites and
forums.

The power of the Net to connect people and share experiences and solutions
was one of the key reasons I embraced the new media 11 years ago.
